Cleaning this Gun - Song about my life!

This morning I received a phone call from my dad saying Rodney Atkins had a new song out called "Cleaning this Gun" and I needed to listen for it.

So tonight I looked it up. Unfortunately there is not an actual video of it yet, but I did find the lyrics and this video which is the audio of the song and shows the lyrics.

Now. . .why did my dad call me to tell me about this song? That's simple. Everyone in my family owned at least a couple guns. Every time a boy came over to meet my parents, my father had every gun we owned out on the table and he was cleaning them, whether they needed it or not. This is the scene that first met Shaun when he came to my house when we were Seniors in high school.

Now that we have a daughter of our own, Shaun is already talking about cleaning the guns when the boys come over. Except for Tyler it will probably be not only her daddy, but also her two little brothers also sitting there. I feel for any boy who has the guts to come meet this family!

Just in case the video does not work, here are the lyrics:

Cleaning this Gun - Rodney Atkins

The Declaration of Independence
Think I could tell you that first sentence
But then I’m lost
I can't begin to count the theories
I've had pounded in my head
That I forgot
I don't remember all that Spanish
Or the Gettysburg address
But there is one speech from high school
I'll never forget

(Chorus)
Come on in boy sit on down
And tell me about yourself
So you like my daughter do you now?
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl
Her momma's world
She deserves respect
That’s what she'll get
Ain’t it son?
Hey y'all run along and have some fun
I'll see you when you get back
Bet I’ll be up all night
Still cleanin' this gun

Well now that I’m a father
I’m scared to death one day my daughter
Is gonna find
That teenage boy I used to be
That seems to have just one thing on his mind
She’s growin' up so fast
It won't be long before
I’ll have to put the fear of god into
Some kid at the door

(Chorus)
Come on in boy sit on down
And tell me about yourself
So you like my daughter do you now?
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl
Her momma's world
She deserves respect
That’s what she'll get
Now ain't it son?
Y’all go out and have some fun
I'll see you when you get back
Probably be up all night
Still cleanin' this gun

Now it's all for show
Ain’t nobody gonna get hurt
It’s just a daddy thing
And hey, believe me, it works

(Chorus)
Come on in boy sit on down
And tell me about yourself
So you like my daughter do you now?
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl
Her momma's world
She deserves respect
That’s what she'll get
Now ain't it son?
Y’all run along and have a little fun
I'll see you when you get back
Probably be up all night
Still cleanin' this gun

Son, now y'all buckle up and have her back by te- let's say about nine...thirty.
Drive safe.

That sounds like my dad... He also liked for me to get the guns in front of guys and load/unload them or whatever.. I'm surprised he didn't try to have me field strip one. He says that he wanted them to know that I could use the gun just fine myself.. It never really bothered me.

OH MY, does that bring back memories.....believe me that really was true, and what is funny is that your dad and my first date, sort of speak was when he took me to Fire Arm Safety class with his sister along....so the gun thing has always been in this family....That song fits just right.
